In the early summer of 2020, in a social climate of fear and unrest, a magnificent giant graced the Old Port of Montreal with her playful presence. A 2 year old humpback whale had wandered inland from her migratory route and remained in the narrow and shallow waters of the St. Lawrence river near Montreal for weeks. For a brief moment, we could all escape the distress of our world and were invited below the water's surface to a different one.

I documented her stay for as many days as I could until one day, when I ventured out to find her, my search turned up empty. I found out the next morning that our beloved whale had passed away.

In the hopes that the cetaceans of the St. Lawrence and Saguenay may be protected, safe and free for generations to come, all proceeds from the sale of this print go to GREMM - The Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals; Gremm.org.

This photo print measures 12"x18" - large enough to make an impact but small enough to fit in any room. The juxtaposition of the spout of a whale against the Montreal city skyline is both magical and unsettling. The image captures the imagination of a child-like belief that the hydrosphere is limitless. The rigid lines of the skyscrapers contrast sharply against the flow of the water and reflect just how different our two worlds are - and how special it is when they meet.
